When the representative of the Greek Orthodox church of Cyprus, Bishop Porfyrios, watched a television interview with the British singer, Boy George, he discovered that an 18th century Cypriot icon was hanging in the singer’s living room. The artefact depicting Jesus Christ Pantokrator was displayed in the Cypriot Church of St. Charalambos, before it was allegedly looted during the Turkish invasion of 1974. At the request of the Bishop, Boy George immediately agreed to return the artefact and received a gift in return. No publisherSettlement agreement/accord transactionnelOwnership/propriétéNegotiation/négociationGreek Orthodox church in Cyprus/Eglise grecque orthodoxe de ChypreAntiquity/antiquitésUnconditional restitution/restitution sans conditionBoy GeorgeSpoils of war/butins de guerreSymbolic gesture/geste symbolique2013/02/12 14:35:00 GMT+1PageAyuba Suleiman Diallo – Qatar Museums Authority and United Kingdom

A collection of golden Mycenaean jewellery (the Aidonia Treasure) was acquired by the Ward Gallery of New York in early 1993. Before proceeding with the purchase the Gallery made enquiries in various Mediterranean States, including Greece, to find out whether the treasure was stolen. Greece responded in the negative, but it later sued the Gallery seeking restitution. No publisherOwnership/propriétéDonationWard GalleryJudicial claim/action en justiceDue diligenceNegotiation/négociationSettlement agreement/accord transactionnelPost 1970 restitution claims/demandes de restitution post 1970Illicit exportation/exportation illiciteArchaeological object/objet archéologiqueIllicit excavation/fouille illiciteUnconditional restitution/restitution sans conditionGreece/Grèce2013/02/08 16:50:00 GMT+1PageMarienkirche Window Panels – Germany and Russia, State Hermitage Museum, Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts

In 1997, 111 panels originally forming a window of the St. Marienkirche (St Mary Church) in Frankfurt-on-the-Oder were located in the Russian State Hermitage Museum. They were brought to Russia by Soviet troops following World War II. In 2001, after difficult negotiations, Russia agreed to return the panels to Germany. In exchange, the German Government offered to finance the reconstruction of the Russian Orthodox Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God located near Novgorod. A second group of 6 panels found in 2005 in the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts was returned to Germany in 2008.No publisherState Hermitage MuseumSettlement agreement/accord transactionnelRussia/RussieArtwork/oeuvre d’artState responsibility/responsabilité internationale des EtatsGermany/AllemagneConditional restitution/restitution sous conditionDiplomatic channel/voie diplomatiqueSpoils of war/butins de guerreNegotiation/négociationOwnership/propriétéPushkin State Museum of Fine Arts2013/02/05 12:10:00 GMT+1PageAuschwitz Suitcase – Pierre Lévi Heirs and Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum Oswiecim and Shoah Memorial Museum Paris

In 2007, Paul Cary acquired a Wasco Sally bag, an object from the Native American group, the Yakama Nation, from an American dealer. When Paul Cary learned that the bag was stolen from the Yakama Nation Museum, he returned it to the dealer and informed the museum. Subsequent negotiations initiated between the museum and the dealer would have remained unfruitful, if it was not for the involvement of Paul Cary. He offered the dealer financial compensation for half of his losses should he return the bag to the museum. Moreover, he would attempt to obtain the financing of the second half from the Yakama tribe. In 1935, Nazi authorities took from Jakob and Rosa Oppenheimer a painting entitled “Road to Calvary” by Brunswijker Monogrammist and sold it at auction. The painting resurfaced in 2006 when a Dutch private individual brought it to Sotheby’s determined to sell it. Instead of asking for the painting’s restitution, the Oppenheimer heirs demanded a portion of the sale’s proceeds. The Dutch Restitutions Committee issued a binding opinion on the matter, as requested by the parties. No publisherSettlement agreement/accord transactionnelArtwork/oeuvre d’artInstitutional facilitator/facilitateur institutionnelPrivate person/personne privéeDue diligenceSale/venteNazi looted art/spoliations naziesOwnership/propriétéJakob and Rosa Oppenheimer2012/11/19 09:50:00 GMT+1PageFour Old Master Drawings – Feldmann Heirs and the British Museum

In May of 2002, the British Museum was confronted with a restitution claim by the heirs of the Second World War victim, Arthur Feldmann, regarding four Old Master drawings. The Commission of Looted Art Europe, who represented the claimant, and the British Museum, jointly sought guidance from the Spoliation Advisory Panel. After deferral of the Attorney General, the High Court held that under the British Museum Act the Museum could not restitute an object in order to meet a moral obligation without an Act of Parliament. Eventually, the British Museum followed the recommendation of the Spoliation Advisory Panel and compensated the family with an ex gratia payment. No publisherDeaccessionArtwork/oeuvre d’artInstitutional facilitator/facilitateur institutionnelEx gratia payment/versement à titre gracieuxJudicial claim/action en justiceArthur FeldmannNegotiation/négociationSettlement agreement/accord transactionnelBritish Museum2012/11/12 15:45:00 GMT+1Page
